Differences between functional nutrition and cellular

Cellular and functional nutrition: what’s the difference?

Those who are interested in the principles of healthy eating have probably come across such concepts as functional and cellular foods. Often there is confusion in these terms, but in reality everything is simple. And today we will deal with this once and for all.

Functional nutrition: what is it?

Functional nutrition dates back to 1907, the year of I.I. Mechnikov proposed to use live lactic acid bacteria to normalize the function of the gastrointestinal tract. As a result, he created a strain of lactobacilli Lactobacillus bulgaricus, which he obtained from Bulgarian curdled milk. Further, these microorganisms, together with Streptococcus salivarius subsp. thermophilus have been used as the basis for yoghurt starters around the world.

As a result, humanity received not just a nutritious product, but also a means to combat such a problem as dysbacteriosis. Today, such products are called probiotics and they are actively used both in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

Mechnikov’s discovery provided the basis for the development of a new direction in dietology – functional nutrition. Its task is not just to saturate the body with useful substances, but also to establish the work of one or another organ or body system.

Unfortunately, today many food manufacturers are speculating on this. They add active substances to their products: vitamins, minerals, enzymes, etc. and make an advertisement out of it. Often such a thoughtless introduction of them into products is not justified in any way, and sometimes it does harm. Therefore, functional nutrition and products should be treated with caution.

Which products are functional?

Due to the lack of clear criteria and state regulation, any product that is enriched with some useful substance can be classified as a functional product. You can even add a vitamin to chips and, in theory, such food can already be considered functional. This is exactly what manufacturers are playing on, adding echinacea, vitamins, minerals, etc. to carbonated drinks. As a result, buyers have an imaginary impression of the usefulness of products.

Although, in Japan, fairly clear criteria were presented for functional products. The OP must:

  1. Be of natural origin.
  2. Be part of a daily diet or be used over a long period of time.
  3. To have a therapeutic and prophylactic effect on the body.
  4. Influence certain body functions.5. Should not be produced in the form of dosage forms: tablets, capsules, powders, etc.

According to GOST, functional products are defined as:

“Special food product intended for systematic use as part of the diets of all age groups of the healthy population, which has scientifically validated and proven properties, reduces the risk of developing diseases associated with nutrition, prevents deficiency or replenishes the deficiency present in the human body nutrients that preserve and improve health due to the presence of functional food ingredients in its composition.”

From the definition it is clear that it should be a healthy food, enriched with active ingredients that can improve the human body. But there are too many questions:

  1. How can FP be represented?
  2. Only a functional food ingredient should improve and maintain health in an FP product?
  3. And what are the requirements for the very basis of the product?
  4. What can and cannot go into it?

And we are back to chips and sodas with vitamins. There are no clear criteria and requirements, which is why such confusion arises. And many people form negative attitudes towards functional products. Although, if you look from the point of view of the Japanese experience, then there really is a great power in FP, which really helps to get rid of diseases and feel much better.

Cellular nutrition: what is it?

Not so long ago, the world heard about a new direction – cellular nutrition (you can learn more about it in this article of our blog).
Its purpose is to saturate every cell of the body with all the necessary nutrients.
Every day our body needs:
● in 21 amino acids (9 of which are indispensable, i.e. their body can only get with food);
● 3 fatty acids;
● 13 vitamins;
● 15 minerals.

Getting all this in sufficient quantities with the usual food is very difficult. Scientists say that in order to cover the need for 100%, a person must eat up to 50 kg of food per day. And how much energy our body will spend to process all this is completely incomprehensible.

That is why cellular nutrition was created. It contains all the substances necessary for the cell and at the same time it is enough to use it in small quantities.

What is cellular nutrition?

Dietary supplements are often referred to as cellular nutrition, but this is not entirely true.And the point here again is the incomprehensibility of definitions and criteria. According to modern ideas, dietary supplements can be called everything that has undergone deep processing and contains food products or their combinations. That is why the concepts of nutraceuticals or dietary supplements are used today to define cellular nutrition products.

They can be produced in the form of capsules, tablets, powders, pastes, etc. You can use them continuously or in courses. Most often they are used as an additive to the main diet.

The effect of cellular nutrition

The main task of cellular nutrition is to establish and restore function in every cell of the body. As a result of the use of KP products, the work of all organs and systems is restored. Our body acquires the resources to fight diseases on its own.

CP has a wider and deeper impact, because changes occur at the level of biochemical processes.
